SH 79 over I-70 Bridge Replacement Project – Bennett, CO
Theorem is the prime consultant for this interchange and bridge replacement project carrying SH79 over I-70. This project includes a blended team where Theorem is the prime design lead and is performing design project management, roadway design, drainage design, and structural independent checks of the bridge which CDOT is designing in-house.
The intersections at the on/off ramps of I-70 are being redesigned to better accommodate the heavy truck traffic that frequents the exit for overnight parking/refueling. The improvements include added turn and acceleration lanes on the ramps, signalized intersection improvements, and dedicated turn lanes on the new bridge. The proposed bridge, consisting of a two-span, side-by-side box girder superstructure founded on integral abutments and MSE walls, was chosen based on best value for the site as determined by the full project team. The best value option limited the profile changes and thus increased the safety of the interchange, reduced approach embankment settlement risk, and simplified construction phasing.
The project design was funded through federal freight grants and is a coordinated effort between CDOT, the Town of Bennett, and local businesses. Theorem is responsible for seeking consensus between all stakeholders to develop a project that meets both the goals of CDOT and the Town.
